Trunk to Table Makeover

This is a story about a true trash to trunk to table makeover. Can you believe this old trunk was on the curb waiting for the trash man to come and swoop it away?? Luckily, I came around the corner just in time to rescue it! It was love at first sight and I just knew that I have to save it. I’ve been intrigued by these old trunks ever since my first time on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. There is just something about seeing that chest full of jewels when you come around the corner on the boat. It’s so magical and makes your eyes light right up. Do you know which scene I am talking about?

Well, there are no jewels in this one, but I did know that I wanted to turn it into a trunk table of some kind. So me and my husband loaded it up into the back of our truck and this is where the story begins!

This is what it looked like when we brought it home. It was in decent shape, but needed some work. There was white paint that looked like it spilled on the back and top of it. I took a scraper to it and luckily it came off pretty good.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it. Something kept telling me not to paint it, but I kind of wanted to. I grabbed some Rust-o-leum chalk paint in Linen and applied it to a section in the back. Well, that voice was right because I did not like it at all! Thankfully, it came off with just a wet towel. I sat back thinking for a minute and decided that this piece didn’t need a complete makeover, just a little enhancing! To me, painting it would be taking away its story. Believe me, I have no problem painting furniture, but this piece was different. Can you imagine the places this trunk has been and the stories it could tell?

Let the makeover begin!

One of my favorite products to use is Waverly Antique Glaze. If you have never tried this stuff, you need to! You can find it at Walmart. I started by applying it to the leather pieces around the trunk. It was like magic! The trunk was literally drinking it up and the colors just came out.

You can really see the difference in this picture. Just look at the left side of the trim compared to the bottom piece. I ended up applying the glaze over the whole trunk.

I love how the glaze enhanced it without changing the look of it. That’s all it needed! It just brought out its natural beauty. Now to turn it into a trunk table!

I picked up 4 of these table legs or feet (whatever you want to call them) over at Lowes, along with the hardware. I decided where I wanted to place them and took a marker and marked out where I needed to drill the holes.

This part was the one that worried me the most. I have never added feet to something and wasn’t sure how it was going to go down. Much to my surprise, it was very easy to do. I did this to all four sides.

Next step was to simply screw the feet into the holes.

Using a baby wipe, I applied the Waverly antique glaze to all four feet. The glaze acts like a stain on raw wood.

Is it possible to be in love with a piece of furniture? I am just amazed at how beautiful this piece turned out. It is quite possibly my FAVORITE piece that I have now! Look how it just stands proudly in its new role. Can you imagine just tossing this piece out?

I hope you enjoyed this makeover and that it has inspired you to rescue a piece of furniture if you see it on the side of the road.🤣 My neighbors trash sure became my treasure! I’m sure that your treasure is out there waiting for you too!
