Nightstand Furniture Makeover

Do you love a good furniture makeover like me? There is just really nothing like the power of paint to completely transform something from drab to fab. I’ve had my bedroom furniture for over 20 years. It’s held up pretty good over the years, but the tops of the nightstands have taken a beating. I’ve been wanting to paint them for quite some time and I finally got around to doing it. I’m excited to share with you my nightstand furniture makeover. Let me tell you that it is exactly what they needed!

Here are the before photos. The front of them are still in pretty good shape. However, the tops have worn down over the years.

I love all the detail on the nightstands. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why I purchased them.

Let’s get started!

I picked up some of the Rust-oleum chalk paint in White Linen from The Home Depot. This was my first time using this paint. I definitely recommend it and I will be using it again. It was very easy to use and the application was very smooth. If you have trouble finding it or prefer to order online, I have provided a link for you. You can find it here.

I started by giving the furniture a good cleaning with this degreaser. This is a great degreaser to use and is non-toxic. You can find it here. I also gave the top a very light sanding to smooth it out. The Chalk Paint does not require any sanding before. This was strictly my choice because the top had a rough texture.

Using vaseline in certain areas on your piece will help with distressing later. When you apply the paint over the vaseline, it won’t adhere well. When you go to distress it with your sandpaper, the paint will remove very easily. Where you apply it is totally up to you and where you want to see the distressing.

It took me 3 coats of paint to get a good coverage.

Once the paint was dry, I took my sanding block and started the distressing process. This is where the fun begins! Be creative and have fun with this part.

I let the paint dry overnight and then sealed them with Minwax Flat Polycyrlic. You can find it here.

What I love about distressing is that it really brings out all the details! They were pretty before, but now they just pop!

I am in love with these nightstands now! It makes me feel as if I have bought new pieces of furniture. The distressing brought out all those yummy details and the white makes them look fresh.

Well, what do you think? If you have an old piece of furniture that could use a little makeover, I encourage you to pick up a paintbrush and get busy! It’s amazing what paint can do!
