diy white distressed candle holder

Diy Distressed Candle Holder

I am super excited to share this diy distressed candle holder with you today! This project is actually inspired by a few candle holders that I purchased from Hobby Lobby a few years ago. I recently posted a picture of them on my Facebook page and someone asked if I had made them. Well….that’s all it took for me to figure out a way to Diy them. This diy distressed candle holder ended up looking just as good as the other ones and guess what??? I only spent abut $3.00 making them.

Are you ready to learn how? Well, hop in your car and head on over to…you guessed it…The Dollar Tree to grab these two supplies.

Here is what you will need to make your own diy distressed candle holder:

a metal bucket and a metal tray from the dollar tree

Here are the candle holders that I purchased from Hobby Lobby. They are the inspiration for this project.

a metal bucket from the Dollar Tree

You will first start by removing the jute around the bucket. I just grabbed a loose end and started unraveling it and it came off pretty easy.

E6000 permanent adhesive glue used to attach a Dollar Tree bucket and tray together

Next, turn the bucket upside down so that the skinny part is on top and the opening is on the bottom. Using both the hot glue and E6000, glue the pieces together. The hot glue provides an instant hold and the E6000 is a permanent hold.

applying petroleum jelly to a metal bucket

Now this is a cool technique to use for distressing. What you are going to do is grab the petroleum jelly and apply it in random places on the bucket, keeping on eye on where you want the distressing to be. The petroleum jelly will serve as a barrier for the paint. The paint won’t completely stick to these areas, making it easier to distress. You’ll see what I’m talking about here in a minute.

Using rustoleum chalk paint in the color linen white to paint a candle holder.

Now go ahead and paint the whole thing. It took me two full coats of the Rust-oleum Chalk Paint.

Make sure to let it dry completely before going on to the next step.

Using a sanding block to distress a white candleholder

Let the magic happen!!

Time for my favorite part….distressing!! Grab a sanding block or sandpaper and start sanding away. You can see where I applied the petroleum jelly and how easy the paint comes off. I just love this look and it is so easy to do.

Using clear wax to seal a chalk painted white distressed candleholder

Once you get the look that you want, you will want to seal your chalk paint. I used clear Folk Art Wax, but you can use whatever sealer you like.

That’s all there is to it! As you can see, it is super easy to do and you can make these fairly quick. I think it matches the Hobby Lobby candle holder pretty good. What about you?
