Tin Can turkey craft made out of a styrofoam pumpkin, a tin can, wood shims and paint.

Tin Can Turkey Craft

Let’s talk about Turkey crafts. Fall has arrived and before you know it Thanksgiving will be here. If you are hosting Thanksgiving, this Tin Can Turkey Craft is a must to have on your table this year! Not hosting? No problem, it would be a great Hostess gift to give to someone too!

I have to tell you that this is one of my favorite Fall crafts that I have designed and I am so excited to share it with you. You will want to start collecting tin cans to create this little guy, so be sure to save those veggie cans from last nights dinner.

We host Thanksgiving every year and I will be making a few of these for my Table scape. I can’t wait to see what they will look like incorporated on my table. One thing that I know is that they will be a conversation piece, for sure!

Start by painting the styrofoam pumpkin brown. Set aside to dry.

Grab the wood shims and stain or paint them brown. Waverly antique wax is one of my favorite mediums to use to create the look of stain. Set aside to dry.

A vegetable can, mod podge and orange, black and yellow polka dot scrapbook paper.

I found this cute polka dot scrapbook paper at Hobby Lobby. Cut your paper to the size of your can. Apply the mod podge to the can with a brush and roll the paper over it. Make sure to smooth it out as you go.

To create some texture and to make it look a little weathered, take your paint brush and white paint and dry brush over the shims.

Let’s assemble this tin can turkey and bring it to life!

Showing how to hot glue wood shims onto the back of a can to create feathers for a tin can turkey craft.

Time to start building your “feathers” with your shims. Using your glue gun, start with one shim placed in the center of your can and glue it on. Apply one shim at a time with the glue, fanning them out as you go.

This is what it should look like when you are done.

Going back to your pumpkin, with a blade or a knife, cut out a section on the top big enough to seat your tin can in. Apply hot glue and place your can on top.

The turkey will be wobbly and will not stand up at this point. Take the wood rounds, apply some hot glue and place the pumpkin right on top to create feet.

I hot glued some rope from the Dollar Tree around the base of the can to clean the edges up.

Wired jute rolled up and hot glued on top of a tin can turkey craft.

It was so much fun bringing the turkey to life. I wrapped wired jute around my hand to create the feathers for the top of its head. This is the part where you can get creative! Have fun with it.

A scrap piece of a feather boa was perfect to finish off the top of the turkeys head. I added some googly eyes and a rock from my yard for its eyes and nose.
