Patriotic Ribbon Topiary Tree

The 4th of July is usually a pretty big deal around my house. Every year we have a huge block party. That’s been a WHOLE LOT of decorating over the years. This year I would like to keep it a little more simple with my decor. This patriotic ribbon topiary tree is about as simple as a craft can get! But… before we get started on the craft, let’s talk about how our 4th of July day usually begins.

The day usually starts with setting up a volley ball net in the cul de sac. Water balloon volley ball is the first of the games. Each team takes a large sheet and shucks the balloons over the net with the sheet. The other teams job is to catch the balloons with their sheet. Believe it or not, it’s A LOT harder than it sounds. This game is really all about teamwork!

We have done mashed potato musical chairs, relay races and all kinds of games. The main event is the annual egg toss. All the neighbors come out with their friends and families and we all compete to win the title and a big red stuffed chicken. The street is lined up with about 50 people in teams of two. After each toss, we have to take a step back. The distance between each team member gets quite far!! I can proudly say that we have taken the title for 3 years in a row now! Woot woot!!! It really is such a fun family day!

Now to get back to the craft! This Patriotic Ribbon Topiary is about as easy as a craft can get.

Here is what you’ll need:

  • Dollar Tree floral styrofoam in the shape of a cone.
  • Various colors of ribbon
  • Dollar Tree star garland
  • Glue gun

As long as you have a glue gun, you can do this project. It really is so simple to make. You will begin by starting at the bottom of your cone and gluing one layer of ribbon around the base of the cone. I started with red burlap that I purchased from The Dollar Tree.

Grab your next piece of ribbon and layer it on top.

Continue this whole process until you reach the top of the cone. Having different colors and patterns adds fun to the design of the topiary.

As you reach the top, you will have to fold the ribbon a little on the top to get it to lay flat against the cone. The next layer will hide anything that looks a little messy.

I had this cute Pom Pom ribbon that I got from Hobby Lobby and decided to add it to the mix.

Next, grab a pair of scissors or something that you can poke a small hole on top of the cone.

Grab the star garland and cut a few small pieces off.

Take your garland and stick it in the hole on the top of the cone and secure it with hot glue.

That’s all there is to it! I told ya’ll this was easy. 😄

It fit perfectly into the base of my candleholder. It adds the perfect pop of color standing next to this USA sign, that I also made from Dollar Tree items.

Try different ways to style it into your patriotic decor, like I did to find the perfect place for it!

I hope you all enjoyed this simple craft and that you will make one too!

    1. My neighbor made this game up. It’s musical chairs and you put a plate of instant mashed potatoes on one of the last 2 chairs. The winner of the game sits in the mashed potatoes. It sounds strange, but when you’re playing with a bunch of adults who are fighting to win the game, it’s a lot of laughs and good times. And…. a little messy!lol
