patriotic gnome made out of a scrap wood using a 2x4 and socks for the beard. I used straws to decorate the hat.

Scrap Wood Uncle Sam

I love using scrap wood for crafts. I have a big ol’ stash of scrap wood leftover from some work that we had done on our house. Let me tell you, that stuff has come in handy more times than I can count! It’s like my own little gold mine that I have on the side of my yard. I’ve made so many cute things out of scrap wood..AND this craft is no exception! If you have a scrap wood stash, you’re going to want to head on out there because I’m about to show you how to make the CUTEST Scrap wood Uncle Sam that you’ve ever seen! At least, I think so! 😉

Here is what you’ll need:

  • 2×4 scrap wood
  • 1×2 scrap wood
  • Square Wood planks (I got mine from the Dollar Tree)
  • Red, white and blue straws ( I found them at the Dollar Tree)
  • Red, white and blue paint
  • Patriotic Scrap book paper
  • 2 white socks
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Half wood bead

Let’s get started!!

You will want to first begin by painting your wood pieces whatever color sequence that you want. I painted the 2×4 white and the other 2 pieces red.

Let’s talk about this patriotic scrap book paper that I got from Hobby Lobby! Seriously, how stinking cute is it? It has so many cute patterns all in one. What more could you ask for?

Pick what pattern you want to use and cut a piece out to fit the 1×2 piece of wood. Apply it with mod podge.

Next, attach it to the bottom of the square wood plank with hot glue.

This creates the hat of the Scrap Wood Uncle Sam Gnome.

Now you will grab the straws and cut them to the rest of the length of the square wood plank. Apply them with hot glue.

Let’s bring it to life!

Grab the hat and hot glue it onto the top of 2×4.

I had to get creative with how to make the beard and mustache, so don’t judge me here! As I was digging through my craft stash, I came across a pair of white socks. I cut them into strips and applied them with hot glue onto the 2×4.

For the nose, I ended up using a 1” half wood bead and painted it pink. Feel free to get creative with whatever you have on hand.

I have to say that I LOVED the way the socks turned out! What do you think? And how cute is the mustache?

I added a cute bow to the top, but you could totally use whatever you like.

After I finished him, I felt that he needed a friend! So, I ended up making another one!

These scrap wood Uncle Sams were so FUN and EASY to make. Do you think you will be making one or a few too? Let me know in the comments OR better yet…post a picture if you do!
