HOW TO MAKE TIN CAN YARD ART
First, you will want to grab yourself a few cans. Make sure that they are clean from any sticky residue left over from the labels. I used soap and water and a little bit of goo gone to clean mine.
Paint one of the cans yellow for the bee and set aside to dry completely. After it has dried, paint black stripes on it. I used painters tape to get straight, clean lines. Drill a whole on the side of the can as shown in the picture above.
TO MAKE THE OWL:
I decided not paint the tin can for the owl. Feel free to paint yours if you like! Begin by drilling a hole on the top of the can. This will be where you will hang the owl from.
Now it’s time to get creative and have some fun! Cut out two small pieces of the coco liner into the shape of wings. Next, glue them onto the sides of the can. Sorry for my lack of photos on this project, I was in the creativity zone and forgot to take them! OOPS! You will see it’s pretty self explanatory and super easy!
The wood rounds made PERFECT big owl eyes! Using your hot glue gun, attach them to the front of the can. Next, you will glue the buttons onto the wood rounds. Add the googly eyes and you are good to go!
For the beak, search around your yard for a small rock and attach it with hot glue between the eyes. Take the wood stems and attach them to the bottom of the can to make a little perch for your owl. Add some raffia with hot glue to the top. That’s all there is to it! Is this just the CUTEST little owl ever or what?
TO MAKE THE BEE:
Begin by drilling 2 holes on the top sides of the can near the rim, spacing them about 2 inches apart. (SEE PHOTO BELOW) Insert the 2 screws into the holes and secure them with hot glue. This will be the bees antennas! Take the 2 bottle caps and glue onto the front of the can. Next, glue the googly eyes onto the bottle caps. This is rustic and upcycled crafting at it’s finest, folks! HAHA
Now to make the wings. Grab your empty water bottle and cut the center, ribbed part out. Next, cut that part right down the middle to open it up. I hope this makes sense! You have yourself a set of wings! That was simple, right?
Remember the hole that you drilled in the center of the can? You will now place the wings over it and drill them through the hole, adding a little hot glue for extra reinforcements. Now grab your jute and string it through the hole. Tie a knot underneath and hot glue it down.
Honestly, how cute is this little bee? You will never look at your canned veggies the same anymore…right?
I really hope that you give these little guys a try! What are some other critters you can think of to make tin can yard art? The creative possibilities are endless!
