I love to find creative and affordable ways to decorate my home. Often times when I go shopping and see something that I like, I tell myself that “I can make that for half the price! Can you relate? It’s just how my mind seems to be programmed! That’s how this project was born. While surfing around the internet, I came across some beautiful cone style trees. They were rustic, shabby and all things wonderful, BUT… I about fell out of my chair when I say what they cost!!! It was definitely an “I can make that” moment! I love how my version of what I’m going to call my diy shabby chic wood biscuit tree turned out. I’m so excited to share it with you!

This project is super easy and only requires a few items! So… warm up those glue guns and let’s get started!

Here is what you will need:

First, I started by giving the paper mache cone a coat of paint. I used my go to Waverly Chalk Paint in the Color plaster, but any kind of paint will work just fine. I had a round wood cut out that I purchased from The Dollar Tree and hot glued it to the bottom of the tree to give it a base. This is totally optional.

Starting from the bottom of the cone, I simply hot glued the biscuits around the base of the tree. I continued this process all the way up, overlapping them a bit as I went up.

This is what it will end up looking like. I cut the top to create a larger hole for the glass knob topper that you will see in a minute. Easy peasy so far, right?

Using a chip brush, I applied the Waverly Chalk paint in the color Mineral. Chip brushes are great to use when you want to create that shabby, distressed look. They don’t typically give a full, smooth coverage of paint. This helps when trying to create the distressed look. In addition, they are super cheap to buy. You can find them pretty much anywhere for about $1.00.

When the paint was dry, I used the chip brush again and dry brushed the color Plaster over the Mineral. Creating multiple layers of paint helps create the distressed look.

Can you see how it’s starting to look weathered and distressed? Oh, how that makes my heart happy.😀 Hang on…we’re not done yet! The final layer is my absolute favorite stuff to use, Waverly Antique Glaze. I have used this on so many projects and it just makes everything so beautiful. I took my brush and applied a little at a time. NOTE: A little goes a long way with this product. Next, I took a paper towel and rubbed the glaze in. This part is just something that you have to do to your liking. There really isn’t any right or wrong way to use it. If you feel that you have applied too much, you can simply take a wet paper towel or rag to it and it will rub off.

You can find the Waverly paint brands at Walmart.

You can see the difference it makes on the right side of the photo.

Always try pick up a few knobs from Hobby Lobby when they are on sale. They are great for so many projects. This one in particular was on the clearance aisle and at that price, I couldn’t pass it up!

I used my hot glue and glued it down through the hole on the top of the cone.

That’s all there is to it! It was super easy to make and didn’t take long. This project was super affordable and honestly, I think it turned out better than the one that I saw. It could definitely be something that you would find in a high end boutique. What do you think?

I ended up making another one! I did run out of the wood biscuits and had to get creative. Fortunately, I had some flat wood beads and glued them on. It worked out great and I like that they are different. Which one do you like better?

Don’t forget to PIN for later!!
