Upcycled Thrift Store Candelabra

I scored on this really cool candelabra at the thrift store for only $12.00! It was love a first sight when I saw it. It looked like something that would be in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. In fact, my original plan for it was to have it as decoration for our annual Halloween Party. Over the years it has been decorated many ways, and it’s about to undergo another transformation. You are about to see what happens when the thrift store and the Dollar Tree collide to make a unique upcycled thrift store candelabra.

SUPPLIES USED:

  • Thrift store candelabra
  • Dollar Tree Plastic Pots
  • Solar Lights from the Dollar Tree
  • Black Spray Paint
  • Glue Gun
  • E6000
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Mod Podge

First, I began by drilling holes into the bottom of the plastic pots to create a hole for the solar lights to go through. After I drilled the holes, I took a blade and cut through the the holes to make one large opening. You can see a video of how I did that here. It will not be a clean cut, but no worries we will fix that later.

Next, I grabbed my white spray paint and gave the pots a good two coats of paint. Once they were dry, I realized that I wasn’t loving the white color. I changed my mind and spray painted them a matte black. I wanted a more dramatic and look and the white wasn’t doing the job! HAHA Thank goodness that you can always paint over what you don’t like!

Moving on to the Candelabra!

I used two coats of Rust-o-leum in Espresso Brown to paint the candelabra.

I took apart the solar lights and spray painted the stick parts white to match the original white color of the pots. Next, I grabbed the tops of the lights and painted them gold.

Time to assemble it all!

To assemble it, I used a combo of both hot glue and E6000. I applied the E6000 around the base of the candlestick holder and on the stick part of the light. I placed the stick part of the solar light into the holder and used hot glue to finish it off. The E6000 is for a permanent hold and needs to set for at least 24 hours to dry completely.

Once again, I decided to change up the design! Does this happen to you too? You have a thought in mind and then when you execute it, it just doesn’t look right? Thankfully, you can always change things up when you need to AND I needed too! LOL.

I had some black and white harlequin scrap book paper and thought it would give this candelabra the POP that it needed. So, I grabbed some Mod Podge and wrapped it around the stick part of the lights. This was a little tricky, as they were already glued into the candlestick holder! Talk about doing things backwards!

Next up, I placed the top of the solar lights through the the opening of the plastic pots and placed them into the stick bases. You can watch a video how I drilled the holes and placed the lights in here.

I did forget to mention that I drilled random holes around the plastic pots to allow more of the light to show through.

Tada….here it is finished!!

Let me mention, that this style of decorating is kind of outside of my comfort zone. This style may not be for everyone, but I know that it will at least give you an idea! I was going for a funky style here that I knew would tie into the black and white them I was going for on my crafty shed porch. The best part is that once I get tired of this look, I can change it up by simply removing the solar lights and plastic pots.
