French Country Farmhouse Sign - Create Make Decorate with Nikki

It’s that time of the year where we have taken down all of the Holiday decor and the house seems to be a little bit bare. Do you know what I mean? There is something about having a fresh start and a clean palette to start with. It opens our minds for change and a fresh new look. It’s time to get back to my everyday style without all of the Holiday decor weaved in. I decided to get crafty and create a few new signs for my home and I’m excited to share one of them with you today. This Diy French Country Farmhouse sign is SUPER EASY to make and is absolutely beautiful…I think so anyway! I hope you think so too.

You will only need a few items to make this French Country Farmhouse Sign

Supplies Needed:

12 x 12 Canvas
Scrapbook Paper
Wood heart cut out 1 large and 1 small
Mod Podge
Flat wood beads
Gray and white paint

Instructions:

Begin by painting the mod podge onto the canvas. You will want to apply a good amount as the canvas has a tendency to absorb it.

Now, apply the scrapbook paper directly on top. Make sure to smooth the paper as you go to get the air bubbles out as much as you can. You may need to apply more mod podge onto the canvas as you move along. I like to use my heat gun to help the drying process and I find it helps with the wrinkles. A blow dryer works too!

I bought the scrapbook paper at Hobby Lobby.

Onto the hearts! I am using a few heart cut outs that I picked up from the Dollar Tree. I started with a base coat of gray.

Don’t worry about getting a full coverage of paint in this step. You will see why in a minute.

Next, I’m taking some white chalk paint and a chip brush and applying it on top of the gray. I like to pay a little bit more attention to the center of the heart and not so much the edges. This helps give it the distressed look that I am going for without a whole lot of work.

TIP: Chip brushes are great to use to create the distressed look. The bristles are a little more jagged and rough and work perfectly for dry brush effects. They do not give a smooth, full coverage which makes them perfect for this technique.

I had a smaller heart that I painted in the same colors, except I reversed the order of the paint. White paint as the base and the gray paint on top.

How to assemble the French Country Farmhouse Sign

Time to grab the glue gun. Glue the hearts together and then glue them on top of the canvas.

To finish the sign off, I used some flat wood beads and glued them around the heart.
