When I was out scroungin’ one day at good ole Habitat for Humanity, I came across this cabinet door. I liked the shape of it and I knew it would create a perfect base for a sign that I’ve been wanting to make for my crafty shed. I love to make signs out of unique items and this was perfect for it!! After grabbing a few items from Hobby Lobby, I got busy making this beautiful diy CREATE cabinet door sign. It was exactly what CREATE MAKE DECORATE headquarters needed!
If you haven’t been to a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, I highly encourage you to check one out. You can find some great deals there on all kinds of goodies. As you can see, I picked this cabinet door up for only $4.00.
I first began by giving it a good cleaning. Next, I grabbed my Waverly Chalk paint in the color Truffle and gave it a good base coat.
Now, I love me some good old chippy, distressed decor and that’s exactly what I wanted to do with this door. To achieve this look, I took some Petroleoum Jelly and rubbed it on with my finger in the places that I wanted it to look weathered and distressed. What this does it not allow the top coat of paint to adhere to those areas. This makes it easier to distress with your sanding block.
Next, I painted it with my FAVORITE Waverly Chalk paint color Agave. I absolutely love this color and I use it any time that I can.
After the paint dried, I took my sanding block and started distressing it. You can see here where the petroleum jelly was and how easy the paint came off. It’s such a cool and easy technique to do and looks amazing!! I tend to get a little happy when I distress stuff, what about you. It’s the little things in life that get me excited. 😉
I picked up some paper mache letters from Hobby Lobby and this beautiful scrap book paper. This sign needed to be bright and cheery if it’s going into my crafty shed.
I began by flipping the letters over and tracing them out onto the scrap book paper. Next, I cut them out and applied them onto the letters with mod podge.
To make the edges look cleaner, I painted them white.
The cabinet door had no hard ware to hang it. To create one, I took some of this wired jute twine from the Dollar Tree and some picture hanging screws. I looped the twine around the picture hanger and secured it with hot glue.
For the last step, I applied the letters onto the cabinet door with hot glue.
OMG….HELLO…..how beautiful did this create cabinet door sign turn out? I just love how vibrant and happy it is! It was exactly what I needed in my crafty shed.
