Tin cans are great to use for crafting. You can upcycle them into so many fun projects. I’ve used them for Home Decor, storage, yard art, lanterns and many more things. I especially love the look of old Vintage tins. Anything that has to do with a French Country vibe, just speaks to my soul. We recently had a party and I was left with this large chili can that I knew had potential to be a beautiful piece of Home Decor. I grabbed a few crafty items and turned it into a Upcycled Vintage Tin that looks absolutely stunning and I can’t wait to share with you how I made it.
Here is what you will need to make your own Upcycled Vintage Tin
- Tin Can
- Chalk Paint
- Spackle
- Palette Knife
- Brown Paint
- Jute
- Embellishments
To get started make sure that you have removed the label from the can and you have cleaned it well with soap and water. You don’t want any of the sticky residue left on it.

I wanted to create some texture to the can to give it a weathered look. So, I applied some of this vinyl spackling to it using a palette knife. How much or little you apply is totally up to you! Do make sure that you allow it to dry completely to a hardened state before moving on to the next step.
As you can see, I applied quite a lot!
After the spackling was completely dry, I applied 2 coats of Rust-o-leum Chalk Paint in the Color Linen White.
How to Decorate Your Upcycled Vintage Tin
Now, this is where the fun begins! I headed on over to the The Graphics Fairy website and downloaded one of the many free printables that they offer. I really loved the French Typography look of this one.
Before I applied the printable with Mod Podge, I tore the edges off of the paper to create a softer look. You can also see a video of the project here.
Next, I used a palette knife and some brown paint to go over the areas that I applied the spackling. This creates the look of chippy paint! Use a little bit of paint on your knife and apply it with a light hand over those areas and it will give such a rustic and weathered look.
For the final step, I added and old key and some jute around the top of the tin can. I don’t know about you all, but I think Jute finishes everything off and ties it all together.
That’s all there is too it! I knew that old chili can had some potential! What do you all think? Leave me a comment below and let me know if this is something that you will try.
