My husband and I bought this 2006 Toy hauler about 5 years ago. We had been wanting to get one for a while, but we weren’t really ready for the commitment of the payments. Tommy happens to work at a car dealership and one day he called to tell me that someone traded in a Toy hauler for a car. Well, as soon as he told me about it I of course headed on down there. The price was right and we drove it home the next day! It was definitely in good condition, but the inside decor was just not my style…AT ALL. I’ve been wanting to give it a makeover from day 1. It only took me a few years to finally tackle this project, but hey… better late than never!

Here are a few before photos:
The orange-ish colored cabinets and the black and gold patterned upholstery were certainly outdated looking and needed a little livening up!
Nothing in here is screaming cozy to me. I knew I had a HUGE job ahead of me, but I also knew that it would be worth every moment. Since this is going to be our home away from home, it had to be as “homey” and “cozy” as possible.
Let’s begin this Toy Hauler Makeover!
First, I started by removing all of the hardware from the cabinets. Next, I gave them a good cleaning and primed them with one coat of Zinsser Bullseye Primer.
As you can see there are A LOT of cabinets, but I was on a mission!
For the final paint coat, I used SHERWIN WILLIAMS Agreeable gray in Satin. It took 2 coats of paint with a few extra touch up spots here and there. Isn’t the power of paint just amazing? What a transformation so far! I used Rust-Oleum spray paint in Flat Black for all of the hardware.
Now to tackle the Kitchen!
Next up was the kitchen and I really wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I came across these peel and stick Subway Tiles on Amazon. They had great reviews and I loved the words, “PEEL AND STICK!” I figured that they would be fairly easy to use and they were! I couldn’t believe it. You can easily cut them with a good pair of scissors Easy peasy! You can see what I used here.
I also found a peel and stick marble contact paper on Amazon for my counter tops. I never knew this whole peel and stick world existed! It’s amazing and I highly recommend it. It was a little challenging around the sink and if you look close you can see where I had to cut in, but it works good enough for me! Here is the contact paper that I used.
Here’s a little sneak peek of it finished!
Now it was time to start the back half of the trailer and my little bedroom area. I decided to use peel and stick shiplap wallpaper on the back wall. Originally I going to use real shiplap, however my husband was worried about it lifting with the heat and the motion of the trailer when we are towing it. So, this was a good compromise.
I loved the way it looked so much that I decided to use it in the bathroom too! The most challenging part of the wallpaper is making sure that you have your lines lined up well. I may have said a few not so nice words while hanging it! 😳
This is what I used here. I love this product so much, that I ended up using it in the bathroom in my house too!
I forgot to mention how I re-upholstered the furniture. It was a bit challenging. Sewing is not my jam and I hate those darn bobbins! Anyway, I basically just made slip covers. I attached the material using an industrial strength Velcro. The benches do not have wood underneath, only metal bars, so this was the best solution that I could come up with. It’s not perfect, but it worked. Another bonus is that because I used Velcro, I can take them off and wash the material if needed.
Now for the Final Toy Hauler Makeover Reveal!!!
Remember those ugly outdated cabinets? They’re not so ugly now! I love how bright it looks now. Before it was so drab and dark.
If you look closely, you can see the velcro underneath the material on the bench here.
I used chalkboard paint for the refrigerator. I thought it would be great to write the camping menu on it or just fun sayings. For the walls, I primed them with the Zinsser Bullseye Primer and used a white paint in satin.
Last, but not least is the bathroom! I mean seriously, how cute is this little bathroom now? I got the shower curtain from Target for $20.00. It’s a really small space that now looks a little bigger by adding the brighter colors.
