Spooky Halloween Ghost Garland

Halloween is my favorite holiday and I cannot wait to get to crafting and decorating my house. For my Halloween Mantel theme this year, I decided to go with cute ghosts with a black and white color scheme. I went through my craft stash and came across these wood ornament ghosts that I purchased from the Dollar Tree last year. They were perfect to make a Spooky Halloween Ghost Garland for my mantel.

I know that it’s barely going into the month of August, but I am channeling Fall already. What about you? There is just something about the Fall season that makes us want to have all the cozy feelings. We long for the smell of cinnamon and pumpkin everything. Lighting candles around the house and the crackling sound of the fireplace just seems to make everything better. At least in my book anyway! If you are looking for some ideas on how to decorate your home for the Halloween season, I sure hope that this craft inspires you and get’s you excited!

How to make a Spooky Halloween Ghost Garland

To make your Spooky Halloween Ghost Garland, begin by tracing out the ghosts onto the scrapbook paper. In case you are wondering, I found this paper over at JoAnns. The number of ghosts you use will depend on how long you want your garland to be. Mine is roughly 4ft. long and I used 5 wood ghosts.

Next, apply the scrapbook paper onto the wood ghost using Mod Podge. I used the iron on method for this project. What you will do for this method is apply the mod podge with a paint brush and let it completely dry. You will then apply the paper onto the surface and place parchment paper over the scrapbook paper. Next, grab your iron and apply it over the parchment paper for a few seconds. When you lift if off, the paper will be perfectly adhered to the surface with no wrinkles! Easy peasy! You can watch a live video of my doing this project here.

It was a little tricky cutting out the eyes and mouth and creating a clean look. I took a small nail file to try and clean it up the best that I could. There are some imperfections, but once I string the jute through they eyes it won’t be so noticeable.

Now to make the pom pom ghosts! Grab your yarn and either use your hand, a book, or in my case a small picture. Wrap the yarn around it until you get your desired size of the ghosts you want. Once done, simply slide the yarn off.

Cut a small piece of yarn and loop it through the piece that you just made. Tie it into a knot to secure it.

Grab a pair of scissors and cut off one of the ends.

On the end that is not cut, tie one more small piece of yarn around it to create the little ghost head. This is what it should look like.

How to assemble the Spooky Halloween Ghost Garland

To assemble the Spooky Halloween Ghost Garland you will need to grab and measure out some jute twine. Now, just simply start stringing them onto the jute. I alternated wood beads, a wood ghost and a yarn ghost to create a pattern.

Pin for later!

I just love how this Spooky Halloween Ghost Garland came out! It was super easy to make and very budget friendly. Now, I feel inspired to get the rest of my mantel decorated for the upcoming Halloween season.

This project can also be used as inspiration for other holidays. The Dollar Tree puts out small wood ornaments for all of the seasons. Grab some of the pumpkin ornaments, Christmas Tree ornaments, stockings and so on to create your own diy garland. Change up the colors and turn the ghosts into tassels. Get creative and have fun!
