You know that old saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure?” It couldn’t be more true for this project that I recently took on. When I found this divider screen a few years ago on the sidewalk next to my neighbors trash, I just knew that I had to grab it! The detail on it is just stunning and I thought to myself, “Why on earth would they throw this thing away?” So, there I was early in the morning in my pajamas and slippers grabbing this heavy piece, conspicuously dragging it into my garage. I knew right then and there that with a little paint, this rustic wood divider would make for a stunning piece of Home Decor.

You can see in this photo exactly what I am talking about. Just look at all of that detail! It had a little bit of water damage to it, but nothing a little paint couldn’t cover up.
After about 2 years of this piece sitting in my shed, I finally got to work on it.

I began by applying a light coat of Rust-o-leum Chalk Paint in Linen White. My plan is to give this piece a rustic old world look.

For the next layer of paint, I used French Linen from the “Hello Hobby” brand that I found over at Walmart. This was my first time using this brand and I will tell you that I was very pleased with it’s performance. It went on very smooth and was easy to blend.

To achieve a more blended look between two the colors, I sprayed water on the surface as I applied the paint. Next, I used my brush to blur out any hard lines.
It’s all about the texture for this Rustic Wood Divider

For another added layer of texture, I grabbed the spackle tool and some brown paint. I applied a small amount of paint on the the edge of the spackle and then scraped the paint across the surface.

This paint technique creates a really cool chippy look without a lot of effort!
It’s time to wax on and wax off!

Waverly Antique Wax is one of my FAVORITE things to use for all crafty projects! It’s like the final layer of icing on a cake. It just makes everything come together!
I used a paintbrush and a rag to basically wax on and wax off over the areas that I really wanted the detail to come out.

This picture shows you the different transitions that this rustic wood divider went through to get to the final result. It’s always fun to see a project go through the process and to see the before and afters. Do you agree?

Here is a closer picture of the final result! I just love how it turned out and it is exactly how I envisioned it to look like. Can you imagine this piece being destroyed in the trash? I am so glad that I was able to rescue this beautiful piece and give it a whole new life.
