Hocus Pocus Book of Spells

This weeks craft is one that I have been wanting to do for a very long time. Today I am going to show you how to make a simple Hocus Pocus Book of Spells! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and being able to create fun Halloween decor is what I look forward to every year. Hocus Pocus is definitely a staple movie in my house every Halloween season! It’s just one of those movies that we never get tired of watching. I mean… who doesn’t love the Sanderson Sisters?

This Hocus Pocus Book of Spells is pretty simple to make and you can find most of the items over at the Dollar Tree. I have been wanting to re-create one of these books for quite some time and I finally got around to doing it. I’m super excited to share with you how you can make one too! If you are a Hocus Pocus fan, stick around because this craft is for you.

What you will need to make your own Hocus Pocus Book of Spells

  • Hard Back Book
  • Tissue Paper
  • Dollar Tree Plastic Eyeball
  • Glue Gun
  • Mod Podge
  • Brown Paint
  • Light Brown Paint
  • Silver Paint
  • Paint brushes

How to make a Hocus Pocus Book of Spells

To get started, you will need a piece of tissue paper. I took mine and wadded it up in my hand to get it nice and wrinkly. Apply Mod Podge onto the book cover and lay the tissue paper over it. Do not worry about smoothing out the paper. You want the wrinkles in it! This is going to create great texture as we move along with the process. Apply another layer of Mod Podge over the top to seal it.

The thrift store is a great place to pick up an old book for this project. I grabbed this one for only 50 cents. The larger the book, the better!

This is what it should look like.

Using a razor blade to cut a plastic eyeball half.

Next, you will need to grab one of the plastic eyeballs. You can find a pack of these over at the Dollar Tree. Using a blade, carefully cut the eyeball in half. Now, take the back half of the eyeball and cut it into half.

You should be left with these three pieces.

Apply hot glue to the book and place your eyeball on top. Next, glue on the other two pieces to create the eyelids.

I had to get creative for the snakes, so I used some mesh tubing that I had in my craft stash! What I like about it is that the pattern mimics that of a snake. You will see more of what I mean by that in the next few steps. Just simply roll it up and leave an end up to create the snakes head. Secure with hot glue. Repeat on the top too!

Time to bring your Hocus Pocus Book of Spells to Life!

I used a piece of wood from a Dollar Tree sign to glue onto the top edge of the book. Using my hot glue gun, I began creating a pattern on the top part of the book . This will become the “stitches” on the Hocus Pocus Book of Spells! Stay with me here…lol!

It’s time to bring those snakes to life! I painted them silver and you can now see what I mean by them actually looking like snake skin! How cool is that?

I used Waverly Chalk paint in the color Truffle to paint the whole book. To create the stitch pattern, I used a light taupe paint with a small paint brush. This project it really all about the details. I wanted it to look like a worn out leather book. To do this, I used a wadded up paper towel with a small amount of the taupe paint and dabbed it over the brown color to create some texture.

Using black paint, I repeated the same process over the snakes to create some depth and to make it stand out.

And…here it is all finished! This was such a fun craft to make and I sure hope that you enjoyed it!

Be sure to pin for later!

  1. This came out great Nikki! I love the idea of using mesh tubing for the snakes! I made one last year and used hot glue for the snakes. I like the texture of the mesh better.
