Diy French Country Lamp

Give new life to an outdated lamp with some paint and scrap material to create a beautiful Diy French Country Lamp.

I inherited this lamp from my parents and while I love the lamp, the style not so much. It was definitely in need of a makeover that would suit my French Country style. The details of the lamp are perfect to add that distressed old world French Country Flair.

How to create a Diy French Country Lamp

As you can see, there is a lot going on with the small lamp shade. I began by removing all of the tassels, beads and ribbon.

It all came off pretty easy. However, I did use my heat gun to loosen up the glue in the areas that it was a little more difficult.

Before I began this makeover I already knew that I wanted to use this beautiful fabric. I had some left over from a previous project. It is one of my favorite patterns and the colors are soft and just perfect!

Let me begin by saying that I am not a seamstress at all and “winging it” is my middle name! LOL. I tend to be the “figure it out as I go” type of gal! That’s how I roll and that’s how I learn. With that being said, I simply layed the lamp shade over the material and cut it to the desired shape. I did this all on four sides.

Before I applied the fabric, I did use my small iron to get the wrinkles out.

I applied the fabric using my hot glue gun and fabric glue. Fabric glue is amazing and the hold is incredible! Have you ever used it before?

After all of the fabric was applied, I used the same ribbon that was previously on the lamp shade to cover up all the edges.

How to paint the base of the Diy French Country Lamp

The detail of lamp base is absolutely beautiful and I really wanted to bring it out. I began by brushing on a light gray color with a chip brush. The chip brush doesn’t give a full coverage, which is what I want. I wanted some of the original brassy look to come through. You can see what I mean in the picture below.

When the light gray paint was dry, I applied a creamy white over it to add on another layer of color. Next, I took a sanding block and distressed the paint.

I finished if off with Folk Art White Wax to give it that extra aged feel. To apply it, I used a paint brush and painted it on and then wiped off the excess with a rag.

And, here she is all finished! I love this lamp and how it turned out. It now fits perfectly with my decor and style. If you enjoyed this makeover, take a look at another French Country Lamp Makeover that I did. The colors are completely different and instead of material, I used napkins! You can see it here.

Isn’t all that detail just gorgeous?
