Board and Batten Wall Makeover

Today I am so excited to share with you my Board and Batten Wall Makeover. I have forever wanted to do a Board and Batten wall in my dining room! I’ve always thought it adds a certain richness and elegance to a room and this room was in need of it! My dining room has dark floors and dark furniture and I really needed to brighten up this space. After watching many YouTube videos on how to do it, I thought it looked easy enough. I decided it was time to get busy.. especially, with the Holidays coming.

This is pretty much the only before photo of the dining room that I took. When I get an idea in my head, I tend to just get going and forget about the photos! There was A LOT of patch work that needed to be done on the walls. Behind the hutch on the wall used to be a large screen TV that left huge holes in the wall. Also, the wall on the right used to have built in cabinets with a computer desk. They were no longer serving a purpose and it was a perfect space for the hutch to go.

Ideas on how to decorate a coffee bar

Here is what that space used to look like. I recently gave it a makeover and was using it as a coffee bar. You can see that whole makeover here.

It took a little convincing of my husband and explaining my vision to him to finally get him remove the cabinets.

What we forgot about was we had the new floor put in AFTER the cabinets! Thankfully, we had a left over box of the flooring to be able to do a little patchwork on the floors.

How to install a Board and Batten Wall

I painted the walls Whipped Cream by Behr paint before I started the Board and Batten wall.

Installing a Board and Batten wall is fairly easy. The hardest part is measuring out the wall and determining the spacing and exactly how many Battens you want. I went on YouTube and found many videos to teach you the math on how to do it. For the length of my walls, I spaced my battens out 24 inches apart. My ceiling is 8 ft. tall, so I measured 3 ft. down from the top to measure the placement of the horizontal boards.

Materials used for this project:

  • 1 x 4 MDF Primed Wood
  • 1 x 3 MDF Primed Wood
  • Liquid Nails
  • Caulk
  • Air Compressor
  • Nail Gun
  • Behr Paint in the color Whipped Cream

To begin this project, I used liquid nails and a level to place the horizontal 1 x 4’s on the top and on the bottom. I did not want to remove my baseboards for this project, so I placed a 1 x 4 above them so the battens would line up with the wood. This will prevent any over hang. I then secured them using my nail gun.

Once the horizontal boards were in place, it was time to place the vertical boards, aka the battens. I measured them at 4 ft. in length and applied them with liquid nails and secured them with my nail gun. I continued this process all the way down the wall.

I went through and filled in all the spaces with a caulking gun and painted them.

I am in love with how this Board and Batten Wall Makeover turned out! It was a fairly easy project to do and it really brightened up this space!

The hutch fits perfectly in the little nook area where the cabinets once were. My husband agrees that it was a good idea to remove them now that he sees the finished result!

What was such a dark and crowded space, now is bright and spacious. I still have a few things that I need to add, such as a new light fixture and a beautiful rug. But for now, this will do!

I hope this has inspired you to do a Board and Batten wall makeover if you have been thinking about it! Listen… if I can do it, so can you!
