Tin Can luminaries

Who doesn’t love a fun and easy project out of things that you have around the house? Well, I have a fun project for you that doesn’t cost a lot to make. You just need a little creativity! These tin can luminaries can be made with any size can that you have on hand. Add as many cans together as you want to make it a beautiful display for your yard.

Create these easy Tin Can Luminaries using recycled cans!

For this project you need at least 3 tin cans. I used garbonzo bean cans, so they are about 15oz. in size. You will also need some cute napkins, tissue paper or scrap book paper. I used napkins that I got from the Dollar Tree a while back ago. You will also need mod podge and some wire or jute.

Supply List

  • 15 oz. tin cans
  • Mod Podge
  • Napkins
  • Wire or Jute

How to make DIY Tin Can Luminaries

After you have cleaned out your cans, you are going to want to brush mod podge on them. You then immediately want to add your napkin on top, smoothing it out as you go. After you have the napkin placed on, you will then want to do another coat of mod podge over the napkin to seal it down on there.

Once your mod podge has dried, you will need to get a hammer and a small screwdriver that is pointed. (I used a very small phillips head screw driver.) This is where the fun begins! You get to create whatever pattern you want your luminarie to be! To do this just simply create dots out of a sharpie in the shape of your design. Remember dot to dots when you were little? Once you have done that you will then take your hammer and screwdriver and create your holes. You are now creating your luminarie! You will also want to make two holes on the top two sides of the can so that you can string your wire or jute through so that you can hang them.

I decided to add some jute with my glue gun to the bottom and top of my cans just to give them a little extra design. Now string your wire through the holes that you made on the top part of the rim and twist it at the base of the hole. This locks the wire in there.

Voila…. you have luminaries!!! Now you can hang them as they are or you can get creative and find something to hang them on. I happened to have a little ladder on hand and thought that they would look cute hanging from it. But, they would also look super cute just hanging from a tree. I love little pops of light around my yard at night. I used these battery operated lights with a timer to put inside. That way I can just set the timer and forget it! At night they will automatically turn on to create a whimsical look.

Here they are all lit up at night! I just loved how they turned out. What do you think?
