I know that I cannot be the only one who sees something in the store and thinks, “I can totally make that.” It was one of those moments that inspired this craft today. Thanks to Hobby Lobby, I decided to put my own spin on one of their Christmas signs and turn it into an ornament for my tree.
I am always looking for creative ideas to come up with for ornaments each year. These tassel tree ornaments are so fun to make and will look absolutely amazing on your Christmas Tree. The fun part about making these is that you can put your own spin on them and customize them to your liking.

How to make a Tassel Tree Ornmanet
First, let me show you how to do a reverse canvas technique. I grabbed my favorite tool to use, the milwaukee utility knife. (My husband bought me this for Christmas last year and it has come in handy so many times!) What you want to do is cut the canvas on the outer part of the staples with the blade. Continue all around and remove the canvas from the frame.
Using the folds on the canvas as a guide, cut off the excess canvas pieces.
I chose to paint my frame white. You can leave it as is or paint the color of your choice. This is your project to get creative with.
Next, I took some scrapbook paper and used mod podge to apply it to the canvas piece. This part is totally optional, I just wanted to give it a different background.
To create an aged look on the paper, I took some Waverly Antique Wax and applied it with a piece of a wadded up paper towel. There is really no right or wrong way to apply it, just dab and smear it on until you get your desired look. Use some water to help blur the lines. You can also use watered down brown paint to achieve this look.
To add a little shimmer, I applied Deco Art Enchanted Shimmer all over the scrapbook paper. This is a new product for me and I love it!!
Next, glue the paper onto the back of the frame, covering the staples.
You may be thinking, why go through all this trouble doing a reverse canvas technique. I just want to show you a budget friendly way and a different way to use a canvas. It creates a cool look and shows you how to frame out your canvas piece.
Let’s make some tassels!!
To make the tassels, the only tool you need is your hand a pair of scissors! Start by wrapping the yarn around your hand until you get your desired size of your tassel.
Next, slide it off your hand and tie it on one side of the loop.
Cut the loop in half.
Fold it in the middle and tie it off at the top. For this project you will need 3 of tassels.
Glue them onto the canvas in the shape of a tree. Grab a small branch from your yard to use as the trunk.
I used one of these star stickers from The Dollar Tree as my tree topper.
How to make a hanger for the tassel tree ornament
To create a hanger, I strung some wood beads onto some jute and glued them onto the back of the canvas frame.
And there you have it!! I think it turned out so beautiful, what about you??? If you love this diy tassel tree ornament, be sure to PIN it to your inspiration board for later.
