Spring is here and our yard is a haven for birds. I enjoy sitting out on my patio watching them play in the bird bath and eating bird seed from one of the many bird feeders in our yard. The chirping sounds of birds bring a sense of peace and happiness. Needless to say, I love birds! Which brings me to todays craft…. Spring Decoupage Birdhouses. Birdhouses come in many shapes and sizes and are fun to decorate!
I’ve picked up many birdhouses along the way at thrift stores, flea markets or wherever I can find them. Each one has their own personality. As you can see in the picture below, whoever made this one got really creative with random items to create a unique birdhouse. I love how rustic it is, but today we are going to give it a makeover with a little French Country twist.
Supply List:
- Napkins
- Mod Podge
- Paint brush
- Paint
I began by giving the roof of the birdhouse a coat of white paint.
How to Decoupage a Birdhouse
Decoupage is a really easy technique to do. You can use napkins, scrapbook paper or whatever kind of paper that you would like to use. Just make sure that it isn’t too thick because you will have a hard time getting it to adhere onto whatever surface you are using.
While the paint was drying, I grabbed these beautiful bird themed napkins that I found over at Tuesday morning. The designer of the napkins are Michel Design Works and they have a variety of beautiful napkins. Here is a link to a similar napkin that I used for this project.
When working with napkins, you want to make sure that you have only 1 ply of napkins. Be sure to peel back the napkins to get to only 1 ply. This will ensure that the napkins adheres well to the surface with no air bubbles.
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the surface and place the napkin over it. Smooth out the napkin by using a sponge brush or your hand. Use a sanding block to trim away and excess overlap on the edges.
I decided to add blue paint to the bottom to bring out the blue in the napkins and that’s all there is too it! What do you think of this Spring Decoupage Birdhouse? It’s a pretty simple technique to do and as you can see it really brightened up the birdhouse. I have a few others that I have done as well. You can see my Dollar Tree Birdhouse Makeover here.
Here are few other Spring Decoupage Birdhouse ideas!
Get creative when decorating your birdhouse. Grab an old knob and glue it on top and add some embellishments to it, like I did on this one.
