Re-purposed Shutter Garden Angel

Hey friends! Are you a lover of repurposing things? There is just something so cool about giving new life to a piece and turning it into a completely and beautiful new thing. This project started with a trip to Habitat for Humanity where I picked up a couple of shutters for $10.00. I’ve seen on Pinterest where people have made Angels out of them and I knew exactly that’s what I wanted to do! I grabbed some wood at Lowes and my power tools and got busy! I just love how my Re-purposed Shutter Garden Angel turned out and I hope you do too! She is super easy to make and will adorable with in your garden.

Here is what you will need to make your own Angel

  • Shutter
  • 1 8ft. long 1 x 3 piece of wood
  • 1 1 x 2 piece of wood
  • Wood garden stakes
  • Screws
  • Wood glue
  • Something round for the head.
  • Paint
Using a old shutter to repurpose into a garden angel.

I made these Angels a couple of years ago and they have gotten a bit weathered. They were due for a makeover and I figured I would modify them a bit. This is what they looked like the first time that I made them.

The size of the shutter that I am using is 2ft. long by 1ft. wide. You really can make these Angels out of any size shutter that you choose, big or small.

Using 3 1 x 3 pieces of wood to create angel wings.

I began by cutting the 1 x 3 piece of wood down to three different sizes. The sizes are 22″, 20″ and 18″. These will be the wings for the Angel. I used the front part of the shutter with the adjustable arm to screw the wood into. This will become the back of the Angel.

Using garden stakes to create legs for a repurposed shutter garden angel.

I decided that the Angels needed some legs this time around to give them some height. My husband had some garden stakes on hand that worked perfectly! I attached the legs with some screws right below the wings.

The length of the legs are roughly 2 ft. long.

You can get creative with her head. I ended up cutting out a scrap piece of wood into the shape of a head and attached it with a 1 x 2 piece of wood. I used wood glue and a screw to attach it to the back of the shutter and to the back of the head. You can use an old plate or you can buy an already cut round piece of wood at your local Hardware or craft store.

For her arms, I used the rest of the 1 x 2 piece of wood and cut them to about 12″ long. I attached them with a screw.

How to decorate your Re-purposed Shutter Garden Angel

Using green paint to paint a garden angel.

It’s time to bring this Repurposed Angel Wing Shutter to life! I began by giving her a coat of paint in the color Moss by Waverly chalk paint. To achieve a distressed and weathered look I put a very light coat of the green on top. This will allow the other colors to show through.

I decided to mod podge some napkins onto her wings to really make them stand out and create a different texture. You can watch a full video of how I decorated her here. I encourage you to really have fun bringing yours to life. Add some spanish moss for her hair and paint a cute little face on her. Give her some character!

I added small planter using a Dollar Tree tin and some flowers. Seriously, how cute is she?

Her sister is just as cute! I have them both in my garden that I see outside of my kitchen window. They bring me joy as I wash my dishes!
