Do you have a Christmas song that you hear that just brings back a childhood memory? When I was little, my mom always played the Old Rugged Cross on the piano. Me and my siblings would all sing around the piano with her as she played. I still have her sheet music that she used to play that song. What great memories those are! This Old Rugged Cross Hymnal Sign is inspired by those memories. I hope that this inspires you to make a sign out of your Christmas memory song too!
Here is the list of Supplies:
- 8×10 Canvas (I got mine from the Dollar Tree)
- Dollar Tree Cross wood hanging decor
- Sheet Music
- Mod Podge
- Wood shims or paint sticks
- Paint
- Embellishments
- Dollar Tree Nautical Rope
- Glitter (optional)
Step 1. You will first start by applying a thin layer of mod podge to the canvas and applying the sheet music on top. Gently smooth out the paper with your hands or with a credit card to get the wrinkles out. You can find a variety of sheet music printables on google images for free. That is what I ended up using.
Step 2. Next, you will grab your shims or paint sticks. I ended up cutting mine to the size of the canvas, but this is totally optional. If you like, you can paint them or leave them raw wood. I painted mine white.
Step 3. Glue one to the top and one to the bottom of your canvas.
Step 4. Paint your cross the color of your choice. I painted mine white to match the shims.
Step 5. Add some bling to your cross. I love the shabby chic style and a little bling never hurt anyone, right? Apply some mod podge to your cross and then sprinkle the glitter on top.
Step 6. To create a hanger, simply take some hot glue and apply the nautical rope in a small circle onto the top shim. Repeat on the other side. Next, glue the cross onto the sign.
Tada…you’re finished! What do you all think? I just love how it turned out. Now my childhood memory has been transformed into this beautiful sign that I can look at all the time!
