A Simple Spring Craft Anyone Can Make

Today I’m sharing how to create this charming decoupage wood sign using a wooden plaque, a napkin, and a few basic craft supplies. If you’ve ever wanted to try decoupage but felt unsure, this is the perfect beginner-friendly project.
And yes… it’s as easy as it looks.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Unfinished wooden plaque ( I picked this one up from the Dollar Tree)
- Decorative paper napkin (I used a vintage-style bunny design)
- Mod Podge (Matte finish works beautifully)
- Antique wax (for aging). I am using Waverly antique wax.
- Paint brush or foam brush
- Sandpaper (optional for distressing)
- Scissors
Step 1: Prep Your Wood Surface
Start with a clean, unfinished wood plaque.
I used Waverly antique wax all over the wood block,, but you can leave it natural for a soft farmhouse look, or lightly paint it white or cream if you want the design to pop more. Let it dry completely before moving on.
Step 2: Separate the Napkin Layers
Most decorative napkins have 2–3 layers.
Carefully peel away the plain backing layers so you’re left with only the top printed layer. This is important — using all the layers will make your design look thick and wrinkled.
Pro tip: Go slow here. Thin napkins tear easily. I like to dip my index finger and thumb in a little mod podge and quickly pinch and release the corner of the napkin and it usually will help pull the napkin plys apart.
Step 3: Apply Mod Podge
Brush a thin, even layer of Mod Podge onto the wood where your design will go.
Place the napkin carefully on top. Don’t stretch or pull — just gently lay it down.
Now, here’s the trick for fewer wrinkles:
Gently smooth it with your hands from the center outward. This helps prevent tearing and keeps bubbles away.
Pro tip: I like to use a heat gun to help smooth and dry the napkin.
Let it dry completely.
Cut off the remaining piece of the napkin and use a small sanding block to sand off the edges. This help to create a clean edge.
Step 4: Display & Enjoy
That’s it!
Hang it on a hook, prop it on a shelf, or add it to your spring vignette. It also makes a thoughtful handmade gift for Easter.
