Dollar Tree Pumpkin Makeover

By Nikki Ernandes

The other day while I was browsing in The Dollar Tree, I came across some Fall placemats. I knew they would be perfect for some of my pumpkins that were in need of a makeover. I am LOVING the black and white color scheme for Fall! I’ve decided to incorporate a lot of it into my decorating this year.

Let me show you a really cool way to use this placemat as a stencil!

First, let me tell you what you will need to make this project!

Supplies needed:

  • A pumpkin
  • Black spray paint
  • A Fall leave felt placemat from The Dollar Tree
  • Gold paint
  • Jute
  • Wood beads
  • white yarn
  • Glue gun
  • Ribbon

I started off by spray painting my pumpkin black. This took a couple of coats.

After that was done, I grabbed the place mat and cut it down to where it would lay as flat as I could get it on the pumpkin. I will say that this was a little challenging being the pumpkin is round, but you just gotta do the best you can do! Hey, we’re not going for perfection here!

Now just start spraying away! I would suggest that you don’t go out and get a nice manicure before this because you will end up ruining it! I mean you could where gloves, but I find them hard to work with spray paint because they get all sticky , your hands get sweaty AND ain’t nobody got time for that! LOL

Doesn’t that look so cool? Now just continue the same process all the way around it.

I decided that I wanted to add a little something fancy to it, so I grabbed some gold metallic paint and painted the stem. Who doesn’t love gold??

Now it’s time to make a cute little tassel for the top. You’ll need to grab some yarn and just wrap it around your hand. How full it is will depend on how many times your wrap it. I’m sure that there is some kind of device out there to make one, but no need to spend the money when you have an extra hand to use. You know what I mean?

Once you have it where you want it just slide it off of your hand. You will grab another piece of yarn and pull it through the middle and then tie it in a knot. Then just cut it at the bottom at one end. TADA… you now have a tassel! Isn’t it cute??

Next, I tied a piece of jute around the center of the tassel, as shown above so that I could add some beads to it. I also decided to add some ribbon to it too.

I just love how this pumpkin turned out! The leaf pattern on it just looks so cool and different. The next time you are at the Dollar Tree, make sure to grab one or a few of those placemats because there a just so many things you can do with them. Other than use them for well…. a placemat!

Be sure to PIN to your inspiration board for later!!

Happy Creating!
